How about the more classic shrug/bolo ? I have a plain black one that I bought for a formal dress, maybe I could mix it in with regular dresses. I admit I do struggle with cardis and dresses. It’s not that I feel old and frumpy, just that I can never seem to get the proportions right. I don’t think I have the closet space to get every kind of cardigan I would need though, so some dresses will just have to remain summer/spring only.

Dress plus cardigan equals looking lovely. That’s a raw formula that I would love to suggest. To help you better apply this formula, I have collected some of the best dress-with-cardigan outfit ideas for you. Despite the high color contrast, I liked the way it looked – both of the colors are kind of muted, and the necklines really worked well together when I layered the cardi on top. This is a super helpful post, thank you!
Since I don’t have many dresses, I think I can apply this same logic to skirts. As long as I keep the top fitted and low contrast with the bottom. V-neck cardigans and cardigans that don’t fasten tend to layer quite easily since they seldom interfere with the neckline of the dress. Layering sleeveless cardigans over sleeved dresses works well too.

Buttons in back and also has a tie in the back to adjust tightness around waist and make a cute bow in the back. Coordinate your sweetie's style with this all-cotton outfit featuring a solid-hued cardigan layered over a patterned dress. This is really helpful, layering dresses with cardigans has been a challenge for me. I’m printing this page out to use as a reference. Well, this is timely information as I was just thinking to myself over the last few days on how to get the one longer cardigan I do have to work.
Very helpful as usual, Angie — thank you! I’ll be waiting to see if the guidelines differ for cardigans over skirts, which is a combination I’m more likely to wear. I think I asked for it in the comments section of the jackets over dresses post, and I appreciate you addressing it. Dresses that fit and flatter my body are hard to find, especially since I avoid sleeveless. You’ve given me a whole new perspective on the problem. When I saw your title my first thought was, “Oh yes, instant frump.” Now I have an excuse to give sleeveless dresses another chance.

I do have to say I feel more comfortable belting the dress and putting a cardigan over, than belting the cardigan and the dress… maybe I should start doing that more. I have always been a cardigan lover over t-shirts/knits with jeans. I just started trying to incorporate dresses into my wardrobe — and now I can still use my beloved cardigans. I want to try this with some of my sleeveless dresses to get use out of them even as the weather starts to turn colder. In an effort to wear our frocks into Autumn and Winter, we’ve discussed layering under dresses and layering jackets over dresses.
I’ll have to take a look at my past dress/cardigan combinations that I liked later to see how they mesh with your guidelines, and how I can improve. It had a very retro feel, but the dress/hose/oxfords had enough modern details to make it look current. Before that I grabbed my BF cardi, which looked fine and would have probably been ok, but I just wanted to see what the other cardi looked like, since it’s a bit of an orphan.
With my sheath dresses, I will wear a long boyfriend cardi, belted or not. To look girly and approachable, a pale yellow fit and flare mini chiffon dress is a great choice. Wearing it simply with white sneakers and nothing else is nice simple way to style it. Alternatively, you can pair the dress with short deep red cardigan and brown ballet flats to look more ladylike.
