When cues about the ambient light are missing, people may perceive the same color in different ways. For example, say you know your mug is white, but the light being reflected from the mug is slightly red. The brain can then discount a certain amount of red tint from the rest of the scene you are seeing. Other contextual knowledge may come into play, for example you are drinking coffee by the window at dawn. It makes sense for the light to be red-tinted as the illumination source is the sunrise.
Light receptors within the eye transmit messages to the brain, which produces the familiar sensations of color. Rather, the surface of an object reflects some colors and absorbs all the others. In humans, melanin is found in cells called melanocytes, which are responsible for producing melanin in skin and hair. People of African descent tend to have more melanin than people of European descent, which is why people of African descent can see colors that others don't.

These results do not fully explain the dichotomous perception of the Dress but do exemplify the need to consider early stage processing when elucidating ambiguous percepts and figures.
